Too many tabs open on iPhone: close them all without losing anything

September 19, 2026

If you keep hundreds of tabs open in Safari, that is not a mess. It is a backup: as long as the tab is there, the thing you found is there. Here is how to move those pages somewhere safe, then close without it hurting.

Why you do not dare close them

An open tab is the only place where your find is still visible. A bookmark is a graveyard: you know you will never go back, because a list of titles looks nothing like what you saw.

So you leave the tab open, and the counter climbs. Safari ends up showing a three-digit number, the tab view turns into a soup of thumbnails, and you cannot find anything in there anyway.

The problem is not the number of tabs. It is that there is no better place to put what you found.

Put what matters somewhere safe, then close

  1. 1Open the tab view and go through it once, newest to oldest. Look only for what you would be sad to lose: it is usually fewer than thirty pages out of three hundred.
  2. 2Keep those pages somewhere other than a tab. From the page, tap Share, then Trouvé: the page becomes a card with its image and its title, and you land back where you were.
  3. 3Close all the rest in one gesture: in the tab view, touch and hold Done, then Close All Tabs, which tells you how many. Safari asks you to confirm.
  4. 4Set up what happens next: in Settings, under Safari, look for Close Tabs, and pick after one day, one week or one month. The pile empties itself, with no courage required.

A tab closed by mistake comes back: in the tab view, touch and hold the new tab button and Safari shows the tabs you recently closed.

The gesture that replaces the tab

For the pile not to build up again, you need a gesture as fast as leaving a tab open. That is what the Trouvé shortcut is for: two taps from the share sheet, and the page is kept with its image, its title and a folder we propose.

You are sent straight back to the page you were reading, with a small confirmation. The tab can be closed without a second thought, which is exactly what was missing.

Weeks later you type “green dress” or “creme hidratante” into the search, with or without accents, with or without a typo. The card comes back, and the link opens.

What about the pile you have today?

If the pile is already huge, do not go tab by tab. On a computer, save every tab of a window as bookmarks, export that bookmarks file, then drop it into Trouvé: the grid fills with images, and you finally see what you were keeping.

That is often the moment you find out that some of those pages no longer answer at all. Our checking page tells you for free, before the import, with no account.

Keep the thing, not the address

In Trouvé, a link becomes a card: its image, a short title, two lines and your own note, kept on our side. The day the page goes away, the card stays. Free up to 50 finds, then €29, one payment.

Questions

Do 300 open tabs slow down my iPhone?
Barely, because Safari puts the tabs you are not looking at to sleep and reloads the page when you open it. What you lose is not speed, it is any chance of finding something again in the pile.
How do I close all tabs at once on iPhone?
Open the tab view, touch and hold Done, then choose Close All Tabs, which shows the number it is about to close. Apple documents this gesture for every iOS version still in use.
Can Safari close my tabs for me?
Yes. On a Mac, Apple documents the setting as “Automatically close tabs”, with manually, after one day, one week or one month. On iPhone the same choice lives in Settings under Safari, named Close Tabs. Turn it on only once what matters is kept somewhere else.
Are bookmarks or the Reading List not enough?
Add to Reading List keeps an address and a title, and so does a bookmark. A library of cards keeps the image, a short title, an excerpt and your own note, so you recognize the page without reading it again, and the card outlives the link.

The stories, twice a month

One letter about a link kept long before it helped. Twice a month, nothing else. One click stops it.

An address is used to send the stories, nothing else. It is never sold or lent, and one click stops it.
